2009 chevrolet aveo review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Inexpensive subcompact features a nice cabin. introductionthe chevrolet aveo is gm's smallest, least expensive car. Aside from its price, what's most attractive about the chevy aveo is its surprisingly handsome interior, at least on the up-level 2lt. The aveo5 hatchback gets extensive revisions for 2009, with new exterior styling and a revised interior. The aveo sedan received these updates for 2007. Their basic architecture and mechanical underpinnings date to 2004. aveo is a subcompact that competes with the honda fit, toyota yaris, nissan versa, and hyundai accent. Aveo was designed to offer sensible, day-to-day transportation. The addition of variable valve timing increases horsepower by 3 to 106 and helps improve fuel economy. Aveo is epa-estimated to deliver 27/34 mpg city/highway. That compares well with the hyundai accent (26/35 mpg) and nissan versa (27/33). The climate and audio controls are easy to use, the driver's seat adjusts for height, and the car drives well. Some of the other cars in this class offer more power, sharper handling, and a quieter ride, but we never felt like we were missing out on something when we were in this car. We prefer the aveo5 five-door hatchback for its ability to haul stuff. for 2009, in addition to the changes to the engine and exterior and interior of the aveo5, the aveo gets a revised lineup mix, and several new and revised features. Onstar assistance and an auxiliary input jack are now standard, xm satellite radio is available, and the radio controls are changed. The driver information center adds an outside temperature display and a fuel economy/driving range function. The aveo5 also gets a rear cargo cover and a rear wiper. Air conditioning is not included, although it can be installed by the dealer. Automatic transmission is not available, nor are power windows, locks, or mirrors. In fact the only factory option at this level is a prep package for air conditioning 50). aveo 1lt and aveo5 1lt 14,100) add air conditioning, an interior air filter, a cd/mp3 player and floormats. Anti-lock brakes 440) are optional for lt models; we strongly recommend getting them because they can help the driver maintain control in an emergency braking situation. walkaroundthe chevy aveo sedan and hatchback are about the same length as the toyota yaris sedan and hatchback, though almost a foot shorter than the honda fit, which is only offered as a hatchback. The re-styling (introduced on 2009 aveo5 and 2007 aveo) resulted in a more aerodynamic shape. This reduces wind noise at highway speeds and improves fuel economy. up front, a thick, bright horizontal grille bar emblazoned with a gold bowtie leaves no doubt that aveo sedan is a chevy. The lower fascia is nicely detailed, and the fog lights well integrated. Moving around to the side, a crisp bevel just below the window line and a parallel bulge down between the wheel arches combine to camouflage the aveo's tall, stubby profile, sort of like a person wearing appropriately directed stripes. The sedan's blacked-out window frames look heavy handed, however, especially with bright colors, and the rear of the roof line appears bulbous. Around back, a bright band between fashionably complex tail lamps echoes the theme of the grille. like many cars, the aveo sedan has a look that tries to find wide acceptability by not offending anybody. But in its attempt to be neither too boring nor too radical, it lacks personality. the aveo5, on the other hand, has personality all right, and the 2009 changes make it look better. The aveo5 shares surprisingly little sheet metal with the sedan. At just 154. 3 inches in overall length, the aveo5 is a significant 15 inches shorter than the sedan. The aveo5 grille is much bolder than the sedan's grille and it dips down all the way to the bottom of the lower fascia. It is flanked by a pair of air intakes that also house the fog lights. while the aveo sedan has a smaller grille with a lower air intake below it, the aveo5 hatchback's larger grille eliminates the need for an additional air intake. The hatchback's front fender bulges around the wheels are less crisply defined, and the character line that runs from wheel to wheel on the sedan, bisects the front doors and dips down on the hatchback's rear doors. The hatchback has another character line and wheel bulge that picks up midway along the rear doors and extends to the taillights. The aveo5 seems to end rather abruptly, just behind the rear wheels. This impression is heightened by a rear-end profile that's more station-wagon vertical than hatchback sleek, and by the almost comically abbreviated quarter windows just behind the rear doors. While the rear end may look a bit odd, the front end is much more attractive than the old hatchback and the current sedan. interestingly, while the aveo5 looks as tall as a bus, it is only 0. 1 taller than the sedan. The aveo5 2lt we drove also had an attractive interior with faux wood trim on the dashboard and leatherette trim on the seats. All radios come with an auxiliary jack for ipods and other mp3 players. The dash is all hard plastic, but that's to be expected in this class. The instrument panel features black-faced gauges with white numbers and watch-like dials. A driver information center is located between the gauges. For 2009, it adds more features, including an outside temperature display and average fuel economy and miles to empty readouts. A digital clock sits on top of the dash at the base of the windshield. the driver's seat is height adjustable, even in the base model, a nice feature for drivers short and tall. The front seat bottom cushion is a bit short for drivers with long legs, cutting some occupants a little short on thigh support. Visibility all around is unrestricted. Small items storage can be found in trays in front and behind the shifter, a pop-out bin the size of an ashtray in the dash, and in door pockets. A dual cupholder also pops out of the center stack. the aveo has an advantage in rear legroom over the honda fit and toyota yaris. Despite its slimmer dimensions, the aveo5 hatchback has about the same rear seat space as the sedan. In fact, it has 0. 2 inch more headroom. the trunk is rated at 12. 4 cubic feet for the aveo sedan. That's competitive in a segment like this, and the back seat folds down if the priority becomes carrying stuff instead of people. cargo space in the aveo5 hatchback is 15. 0 cubic feet behind the rear seats. It comes standard with a rear cargo cover to hide packages from prying eyes. The rear seat folds flat to open.

Gm's answer to chrysler's pt cruiser. introductionthe chevrolet hhr was launched as an all-new model for 2006. It's built on the platform of the winning chevy cobalt small sedan, and incorporates the cobalt's best features: engine, transmission and suspension. The hhr is on a smaller scale, but there are no bones about its retro styling. we found the hhr to be fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus it gets decent fuel economy. The interior wasn't as functional as we'd have liked, however, and the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather. lineupthe chevrolet hhr comes in a simple ls model, plus a 1lt and 2lt. Abs comes standard on the 2lt, and is optional for the ls and 1lt 400). Electronic stability control is not available. walkaroundif there's ever been a case of a picture of a so-called suv being worth a thousand words, the hhr should be it. It looks like a 1949 panel delivery truck, with the edges smoothed over. This is the current look, whose origins are unclear, but may trace to the mitsubishi endeavor, whose flattened and edged flares were designed purely to be noticed. speaking of the current look, the tail lamps are two round red vertical bulbs on each side. The big grille is chrome, every inch of it, and looks almost exactly like the '49 suburban grille. The headlights, however, are modern glittering wedges, containing one big beam and the turn signal. the front and rear bumpers are molded plastic, unlike the steel in the body. Technically, they may be part of the fascia, but because they take the conspicuous shape of bumpers, they are more like square lumps extending from the extremities of the vehicle. the glass runs neatly uninterrupted all around the vehicle, with five rectangular windows from b-pillar around the rear to b-pillar. There's something about the simple shape of these windows that gives the hhr a low-rider look, although the roof itself is relatively high, as the name declares. Roof rails are almost useless without crossbars, and we think this vehicle would look more appropriate with a functional black after-market rack anyhow. the hhr was designed by the same man who designed the pt cruiser; he left chrysler for gm shortly afterward. We received quite a few comments on the hhr's looks, all of them favorable, some thinking it was the new pt cruiser, and others simply asking what it was. 'wow, that looks terrific, just terrific,' said one fellow. We asked what he liked about the styling. 'well, i've got a '23 dump truck,' he replied, 'which i wish i could drive on the street because it looks so cool. The tan cloth interior, despite its name of 'cashmere cloth,' looks like upholstery that might be found in an inexpensive furnished rental unit. The door pockets are small. There's a useful flip-up compartment on top of the dash, however, and there's a small glovebox. in the rear, there's one cupholder and small door pockets. The back of the front passenger seat has a tight storage net, but not the back of the driver's seat. Even operating the driver's window, at toll booths for example, requires leaning forward and reaching down. Window switches should be on the driver's door. the turn signal makes a loud, rapid, annoying click. The rearview mirror blocks a significant chunk of forward visibility out the smallish windshield. the gauges and controls are, well, general motors. Superfluous chrome rings and trim, and instruments designed to look cool, rather than to be easily readable. one good thing (even if it is bright chrome) is the door handle, an ergonomically correct ring which actuates with a horizontal inward pull. if the hhr misses on the little interior things, the cargo storage possibilities are excellent, although the total cargo area of 55. 6 cubic feet is 8. 4 less than in the pt cruiser. The rear split 60/40 seat folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat; and since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the left, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally. The rear liftgate is one piece, and raises easily. not surprisingly, there isn't much legroom in the rear seat. Kids are always fine, as long as three of them can share one drink. We actually carried six 10-year-old boys on a soccer team for 60 miles in the hhr, and they were all happy. Even the two who squeezed into the way back. overall, interior-wise, the hhr isn't in the same league as the honda element. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter ecotec is a wonderful little engine. It makes 172 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque at 5000 rpm, numbers which don't indicate anything special. In fact, that torque peak suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak. We drive up a steep, slow hill every day, and the hhr plugged up the hill like a tractor, with no shifting-down of the automatic transmission. Which is more than can be said of the powerful pontiac gto we tested recently. transmission ratios have a lot to do with this efficient delivery of power. In fact, we liked the way the automatic, without a separate manual mode, could be easily manually downshifted anyhow, and how it held second gear going down that same steep, slow hill. Inspired by its trucks and cars of the '40s, chevrolet revealed the retro hhr in 2006, offering suv styling with sedan-like economy. Since then, the nostalgic design has remained not only pleasing but practical, as the boxy 4-door shape lends itself to increased interior space. The front-wheel drive hhr is available in two trim levels: ls and lt. The hhr ls is equipped with 16-inch wheels, cruise control, air conditioning, satellite radio and mp3 capability; lt trims add body-colored mirrors and a power driver's seat. A 2lt option package outfits the lt with additional features that include a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel/shift knob; leather upholstery and heated front seats are also available for the lt, while a power sunroof is optional on both trims. Standard safety features include stability and traction control systems, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, front airbags, overhead curtain airbags for front and rear passengers and a tire pressure monitoring system. A rearview camera parking aid system is available. The chevrolet hhr carries over with minimal changes for 2011. The my link package now includes one year of satellite radio service, and the ss trim level has been removed from the model lineup.
