2008 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Developed with microsoft, sync provides a hands-free link to cell phones and mp3 players through a series of voice commands. It can even read text messages to occupants through the stereo system. It's an amazing system and ford appears to be ahead of everyone else in this area.  the redesigned interior is aesthetically pleasing. It looks better than that of the outgoing model, with nicer graining on the plastics that continue to dominate the cockpit. The ambience is not luxurious but appropriate for the price. While interior noise is also down from the last model, there is still plenty of road and engine noise, which are typical of economy cars.  as in the past, the focus handles well. We experienced lots of road feel with little body lean in corners while driving the top-line ses with its a sportier suspension. That road feel can make the ride a bit harder than some might prefer, but it isn't harsh and we appreciated the handling response.  with 140 horsepower, the focus has decent power for most needs, but passing on a busy two-lane road will require a lot of space. Options for s include cruise control 215), sirius satellite radio 195), and a temporary spare tire 60).  the se coupe 15,075) and sedan 15,375) add power windows, locks and mirrors; remote keyless entry; vehicle message center; and aluminum alloy wheels. Leather upholstery 695) is optional, and the ses is available with the se options.  safety features that come standard consist of dual-stage front airbags; torso-protecting, seat-mounted front side airbags; head-protecting side curtain airbags; tire pressure monitor; and latch-style child seat anchors. The result is at best conservative and at worst awkward and dull.  the front end is dominated by a two-bar version of the three-bar, razor-like chrome grille that first appeared on the fusion. The grille is flanked by headlights that wrap around to the sides and follow the curve of the hood toward the windshield. A too-large expanse of bumper is located under the grille and below that is a large air intake that houses fog lights at the corners on the topline ses model.  the sides feature a chromed triangular applique at the back of each front fender that simply seems like tacked on ornamentation. This piece, which looks like an f on the driver's side, is the starting point for a pair of character lines that flow back. The bottom line leads to the rear wheelwheel, while the top line rises from front to rear and teams with a high tail to give the focus the appearance of at least some dynamic motion. The rear of the coupe's roofline stays almost as high as the sedan's, which makes it look a bit clunky. The car looks best from the rear, where the simple angular shapes seem to work.  the overall result is a look that seems like a poor attempt at a family design statement. interiorinside the ford focus is an aesthetically pleasing cockpit. The dashboard is dominated by a shiny plastic silver inset that covers the middle of the dash and leads into the center console. This is surrounded by black plastic top and bottom. There are no soft-touch materials here, but the graining looks nicer than it did in last year's model. The center console is deep, though not especially wide.  on top of the dash is a hooded cutout that displays trip computer, radio, and, when ordered, sync information. The instrument panel has two large gauges, the speedometer and tachometer, and two small gauges, the fuel gauge and water temperature gauge. Along the top are buttons for 10 radio station presets. When sync and sirius satellite radio are ordered, drivers can store up to 60 stations: 20 fm, 10 am and 30 sirius. An easy-to-use set of climate controls is located below the stereo and sync controls. None of these buttons are hard to identify or reach.  at the base of the center stack is a nice rubberized tray. This area is fairly important because it is where drivers will keep their phones and ipods when they use the sync system. We found sync to be genuinely useful and fairly easy to use. When an mp3 player is plugged in, sync charges it and has access to the complete playlist. The driver can tell sync to play a specific song, artist, or genre of music from his mp3 player. When a bluetooth-enabled phone is in the car and paired to the system, sync can access its phonebook. It can even play back incoming text messages through the speakers and allow the driver to respond with one of 15 predetermined messages, all while the driver keeps his hands on the wheel. There are a couple glitches, though. I couldn't get the system to recognize 'kirk.' instead it heard my name as 'curt,' which is another number in my cell phone. And in general, the system is a bit tricky to learn at first.  the front seats are comfortable, with plenty of head and leg room. Thanks to large mirrors and small rear pillars, the driver's seat affords a good view to all corners. The rear seat has decent room with shorter people up front, but leg room disappears as the seats are moved back for taller front seat occupants. Head room is decent in the sedan, but a bit lacking in the coupe.  the trunk is fairly large at 13. 8 cubic feet. That's as big as or bigger than some midsize cars. The second row seats fold mostly flat to allow loading long, flat packages. This focus, though different in appearance, is basically that same car, which means it still handles well.  we drove the 2008 focus ses and found a lot of road feel is communicated through the steering wheel. There is little lean in turns; after an initial shift, it takes a nice set. The ses model benefits from the addition of a rear stabilizer bar for sharper handling. We have not driven the base model.  good road feel means the ride quality is a bit harder than some might prefer. But the focus isn't a penalty box. With the manual transmission the focus gets an epa-rated 24/35 mpg city/highway. With the automatic, it gets a healthy 24/33mpg.  the 2. 0-liter is competitive with most engines in this class. It has decent power for most needs, but passing maneuvers will require plenty of space.

2008 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Major revisions make previous five hundred vastly superior. introductionford had little success with its large, front-drive family sedan called the ford five hundred since its introduction two years ago. So, for 2008, ford dumped the five hundred name and went back to the name of a clear market winner, renaming this car the 2008 ford taurus.  likewise, the mercury montego has been renamed mercury sable, and the ford freestyle has been renamed taurus x, the x for crossover suv.  along the way, ford has made some 500 changes to the new taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the five hundred. The general body shape of the new taurus is the same as that of the previous five hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better.  this family of vehicles, loosely based on the same architecture as the volvo s80 luxury sedans with some detail changes to the suspension systems, also uses the same swedish haldex all-wheel-drive system as the volvo when it is ordered as an option.  the weak 3. 0-liter v6 engine has been dropped in favor of a new 3. 5-liter, 24-valve v6 engine that makes a full 30 percent more power. It's the same engine that powers the larger and heavier ford edge and lincoln mkx crossovers and mkz luxury cars. Likewise, the cvt transmission has been replaced by a new 6f six-speed automatic.  this new powertrain makes the taurus a whole lot more fun to drive than the ill-conceived five hundred was. Its 0-60 mph acceleration performance has been reduced by more than a second and a half, from 9. 2 seconds down to 7. 6 seconds, which is a huge chunk of performance. The new engine not only makes more power, it gets 10 percent better fuel economy, even after adjusting for the new, stricter testing procedures epa has mandated for 2008 models. On the open road, we found the taurus to be very quiet and smooth.  taurus competes directly against other larger sedans on the market, chief among them the toyota avalon, the chevrolet impala, and the chrysler 300. The big kicker in all of this is that, with all the new styling, interior, engine, transmission and standard features upgrades, the price hovers only about $250 above comparably equipped versions of last year's bland, slow five hundred. lineupthe 2008 ford taurus features two models, sel 23,245) and limited 26,845). Each is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, called sel awd 25,095) and limited awd 28,695). Electronic stability control is an option. It's altogether a better looking and more contemporary design for the grille, with new, quieter mirrors, gigantic new headlamp units, big driving lamps under the new bumpers, with necessary changes to the hood and fenders. Decorative, nonfunctional gills have been added to the front fenders to add visual interest and take up some space on the huge fenders.  likewise, the taillamps, rear quarter panels and decklid have been redone, and the rear bumper has been rejiggered to feature exposed dual exhaust tips. interiorwe found the 2008 taurus a very pleasant car to be in. Sync features include the ability to have text messages read aloud, voice recognition for control of both phone and music functions, and phonebook transfer. The system is upgradeable for future players and for additional functionality down the road. Sync will be offered on taurus and 11 other 2008 ford, lincoln, and mercury vehicles later this year.  a taurus limited awd we drove was loaded with options, including advancetrac electronic stability control, a roof-mounted rear-seat dvd entertainment system, heated front seats, convenience package, wood package, power adjustable pedals, a moonroof, voice-activated touch-screen navigation, sirius satellite radio, and reverse sensing system, bringing the bottom line to $33,600, and making it the best-equipped taurus possible, short of the 18-inch chromed aluminum wheel option. driving impressionthe new engine and transmission in the 2008 ford taurus are a wonderful team. The engine is extremely quiet and smooth at idle, and uses a pendulum mounting system that effectively separates its motions and vibrations from the rest of the car. It sounds healthy, powerful and smooth at full throttle, makes the car plenty quick in acceleration and passing situations, and settles down to a nice background hum in sixth gear, as it should. At freeway speeds, the taurus is very, very quiet inside.  we spent in inordinate amount of time at full-throttle with the new taurus because it's so much fun to wind up in the lower gears; the old five hundred was just slow. The steering is accurate, with good feedback, and not overly assisted in normal and highway driving. It just happens to look and behave like a family sedan. It won't outrun a chrysler 300 hemi, but it's quicker than almost everything else in the class, and at these prices, we think it's a real bargain.  newcartestdrive. Com correspondent jim mccraw filed this report from dearborn, michigan. model lineupford taurus sel 23,245); sel awd 25,095); limited 26,845); limited awd 28,695). assembled inchicago, illinois. options as testeddvd navigation system 1995); convenience package 475); dvd entertainment system 995); advancetrac esc 495); sirius satellite radio 195). model testedford taurus limited awd 28,695). The new 2008 ford taurus is a refreshed and rebadged ford five hundred with a new, more powerful engine for even better value. The front-wheel or all-wheel drive taurus includes a new 263 hp 3. 5-liter v6 engine and six speed automatic transmission for improved power and fuel economy. It also gets a new chrome grille, new tail lamps and rear fascia, new chrome exterior accents and mirrors, better sound insulation, and revisions to the suspension. Ford's industry exclusive new sync hands-free communications and entertainment system is included on limited, optional on sel. Safety features include seat-mounted side airbags for the front seats and safety canopy side-curtain airbags. Advancetracâ® electronic stability control is available. For 2008, the ford taurus is a return to a well known nameplate, carried over from the 2007 ford five hundred. 2008 ford fusion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid midsize sedan. introductionthe 2008 ford fusion is an excellent choice among midsize sedans and should not be overlooked. The v6 comes with a six-speed automatic, a feature associated with top-end luxury cars. Both engines provide adequate power and fuel economy though they are outperformed by the engines offered by several competitors.  fusion's ride quality is as good as any car in the class, save perhaps the toyota camry. Available all-wheel drive and a new sport package make fine handling even better.  the cabin is comfortable and well designed with controls that are intuitive and easy to operate. An optional sport appearance package comes with a firmer suspension and sporty interior and exterior styling cues. Antilock brakes and a tire-pressure monitor are now standard, while rear obstacle detection becomes an option. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, a five-speed automatic transmission is optional 875). The se is available with the v6 21,445) or v6 and all-wheel drive 23,295).  the sel 19,400) adds automatic headlights, automatic temperature control, upgraded cloth interior, upgraded wood or piano black interior trim, leather wrapped steering wheel, analog clock, heated outside mirrors, keyless entry keypad, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and p225/50r17 tires on aluminum wheels. The sel is also available with the v6 22,150) and with the v6 and all-wheel drive 24,000).  a new sport appearance package 895) is offered on front-drive v6-powered models. It includes sport-tuned suspension, black chrome grille, decklid lip spoiler, p225/45r18 tires on aluminum wheels, dual chrome exhaust tips, a brushed aluminum radio surround, red seat inserts, and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and center console.  leather seating 895) is available for the se or sel. Other options include a dvd-based navigation system 1,895) that adds voice-activation for 2008, sirius satellite radio 195), rear spoiler 295), heated front seats 295), and a moon and tune package 795) with a power moonroof and audiophile stereo with six-disc cd changer and eight speakers. Also new for 2008 are ford sync entertainment and communications system 395) and ambient lighting 295), which illuminates the front cupholders and front and rear footwells and is offered in seven colors.  safety features on all models include dual-stage front airbags; seat-mounted, torso-protecting front side airbags; side curtain airbags for head protection in both rows; tire-pressure monitor; latch child-seat anchors; rear-door child-safety locks. Abs comes standard on all 2008 fusion models. Traction control is standard on all-wheel-drive models, optional on se and sel front-drive models 95). Rear obstacle detection is optional 295). walkaroundthe ford fusion has presence, unusual among midsize sedans that tend to blend in to the scenery. Some people, including us, like the aggressive, angular look of the fusion, some don't. We'd like to note that polarizing designs are often more successful than bland designs that neither offend nor excite anyone. In short, we think this is a good-looking car.  the styling features large headlights and a bold grille. Three thick chrome bars across the grille have a razor-like appearance and make the car look more upmarket than its pricing might suggest. The front bumper almost disappears as there are two chrome strips below it that match the ones on the grille.  when the fusion was first introduced, ford executives said its three-bar horizontal grille would become the signature styling cue for ford cars. Since then it has been seen on concept vehicles, as well as the edge crossover vehicle and the new taurus and newly restyled focus. A fold along the top edges of the front fenders runs all the way back along the edge of the roof to the rear deck.  the fusion features a wide track, which makes it stand out on the freeway when viewed from behind. A high trunk line and large triangular taillight clusters with chrome trim give the rear end a classy look.  the overall effect is pleasing. The chrome on the car contrasts nicely with the body work, especially on dark-colored models or red. Gaps between body panels seem a bit larger than those on some of the other cars in the class.  all-wheel-drive models have awd badging on the rear deck. While the 17-inch wheels that drive the awd sel models are the same design, they have a tell-tale hash mark to identify all-wheel-drive models.  the sport appearance package features a black chrome grille, color-keyed fog lights, a unique rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, and most notably, 18-inch aluminum wheels on lower profile tires.  the fusion fits into the ford car lineup between the compact focus and the big taurus sedan. It has much the same dimensions as its competitors. Although the fusion shares its basic floorpan with the mazda6, its wheelbase is two inches longer and it is an inch or so wider. Ford also says fusion has a stiffer bodyshell than the mazda6, which is good because a rigid structure is the key to a smooth ride and responsive handling. interiorthe cabin of the ford fusion is comfortable and benefits from straightforward controls.  the front seats manage to be slightly soft, yet supportive enough for long drives. A standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel and the six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, standard on the se and sel models, helps drivers get comfortable, be they short or tall.  in keeping with its european influence, ford has chosen to go with the soft touch for surface materials, which is expected in a luxury car but not in a mass-market car. The car we drove had a dark charcoal interior so everything was finished in black. The optional two-tone interior, especially the dark stone and camel with faux wood trim looks more inviting. The lighter colored interiors look friendlier.  the dashboard is a straightforward design that runs horizontally across the car's width with just a binnacle above the instrument pod. Decent-sized buttons make the radio and climate controls easy to operate. The center console, door pockets, and front seatback pockets provide additional storage.  se and sel models have a front passenger seatback that folds down, making it possible to haul extra-long items. Heated front seats are an option on sel models with leather seating. Fusions equipped with the new sport appearance package have red seat inserts (cloth or leather) and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and center console.  the new sync communications and entertainment system can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions. Head and leg room measurements don't put the fusion at the top of its class, but the back seat feels roomier than the numbers suggest.  the fusion has a good-size trunk with a flat floor and low lift-over height, making it easy to load groceries, luggage or cargo. All fusion models include a 60/40 split rear seatback, which allow.
