1999 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Do this in jeep's redesigned '99 grand cherokee limited and it takes off a bit slower than last year's model. Part of the reason is that the old 5. 2-liter v8 engine has been replaced with an all-new 4. 7-liter overhead cam v8. The minor loss in acceleration is offset by the refinement of the new engine. It accelerates smoothly, with none of the mechanical grumbling and rude roaring of the previous 5. 2-liter and 5. 9-liter engines. We'd call the big jeep more mature. walkaroundthe new jeep grand cherokee is 3 inches longer than the one it replaces, but its wheelbase is the same. It looks taller, bowed on top with a forehead look to the front of the roof. Its round lines look like paul bunyan took his sanding block to the previous sharp body creases.  underneath, the grand cherokee still sits atop live axles, like the previous model. The trend among competing sport-utilities is to use independent suspensions, but jeep's live axle is only a drawback on paper, as we note later. The jeep retains its unibody integrated truck frame-and-body design. This rare design strategy -- shared by the smaller jeep cherokee and the nissan pathfinder -- results in a grand cherokee that is lighter and more rigid than it would be using more traditional designs. With adjustments for similar equipment, jeep says the new grand cherokee is about 50 pounds lighter overall. Less weight and a tighter turning radius help make the bigger jeep more maneuverable.  two engines are offered. Jeep's 4. 0-liter inline-6 has been re-engineered for 1999. It's quieter, cleaner and more powerful, producing 195 horsepower -- up 10 horsepower from last year.  a new 4. 7-liter v8 is optional. With single overhead cams on each cylinder bank, it produces 235 horsepower, or 15 horsepower more than the previous 5. 2-liter pushrod v8. Torque is down slightly, which accounts for the diminished acceleration.  two familiar trim levels are available, laredo and limited, each with a long list of standard features.  base grand cherokees come with rear-wheel drive, but that seems like buying a louisville slugger just to hit rocks. Its simple but effective automatic locking center differential apportions torque to the front wheels whenever the rear wheels slip.  the quadra-drive system is optional on both the 6-cylinder and v8 models. Quadra-drive is the same system as quadra-trac ii, but it adds hydraulically locking front and rear differentials. By using three differentials, the system automatically sends torque front-to-rear and side-to-side whenever a wheel slips. And all three systems come with a low-range set of gears that can be used for serious traction situations. interiorrear legroom is tight. Climbing into the back seats is much easier than before, however, because the rear doors are wider.  more space is available for cargo because the spare tire was moved from its upright position on the left rear side of the cargo compartment to lay down under the load floor. Part of that impression comes from the high seating position. Controls and switches have been improved in feel and operation, including the jeep's once-balky turn signal/wiper combination stalk.  the front seats have highly padded longitudinal ribs, and the thickness of the padding reminds us more of house furniture instead of serious off-roader benches. But no news is good news here. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, the jeep feels controlled and steady. The price for this capability is a tall, body-rolling ride. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the grand cherokee.  steering is quick but isolated, despite a thorough restructuring of the front engine cradle and front suspension and steering component mounts. But that's the same for all of the top-selling sport-utilities. Like them, the jeep's still a truck, sitting tall, rolling side to side in corners and high winds.  the biggest improvement in the ride of the new grand cherokee is a newfound tendency to stay pointed straight ahead. A triangle link that replaces the panhard rod locating the rear axle is directly responsible for this improvement.  careful tuning of suspension mounts, and even drivetrain mounts, allows the live axles of the jeep a lot of compliant movement. The axles move and pivot on large bumps and dirt holes where the independent suspensions of other suvs reach their limits of travel, and ultimately toss the occupants about inside.  power is adequate with the new v8 and, aided by relatively light weight, the jeep feels faster and more responsive than most 6-cylinder suvs and the huge v8 tahoes and expeditions. One reason the spare was relocated to under the load floor was to give more visibility rearward. That's what it did for us. The grand cherokee requires fewer try-and-fail attempts to conquer obstacles. It's tougher to upset than any high-volume wagon (hummers and land rovers excepted).

2008 jeep patriot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes, multi-stage front airbags, side airbag curtains, electronic stability control and electronic roll mitigation.  as it's programmed in the patriot, the optional continuously variable transaxle (replacing the automatic transmission) is too weird to be comfortable. The same cvt is used in the jeep compass, and it works well. The independent suspension is as good as the engine, delivering steadiness and comfort in every abusive situation we could find for it, during a long day of driving on every surface from patchy two-lanes, to hard-packed dirt roads, to sandy off-road trails, to shallow rivers, to deep gullies. For the off-road parts, we drove a jeep with the optional freedom ii off-road package that makes the patriot trail rated and raises the price by about $2000.  on twisty roads and maneuvering around-town, the patriot feels light and nimble. The turn-in is sharp. The body is well isolated from the wheels. This keeps the jeep under five mph and under control, going down steep hills, even icy ones. Air conditioning and cruise control do not come standard, and the windows, mirrors and door locks are manual.  air conditioning is optional 850). Power windows, mirrors and door locks with remote entry are part of a power equipment group 995). Another package has cruise control. A more complete package includes all those things plus tinted windows, map and dome lights, driver seat height adjustment, fold-flat front passenger seat, reclining rear seats, 115-volt outlet, foglamps and roofrail crossbars.  the limited 2wd 19,985) and 4wd 21,785) adds most if not all of the options in the groups, as well as 17-inch aluminum wheels, foglamps, passenger grab handles, chrome roofrails and other trim, and leather-trimmed seats.  a continuously variable transaxle is available for the 2. 4-liter engine as well as a 2. 0-liter engine.  the off-road package is called freedom drive ii, and uses the cvt with lower ratios; it adds skid plates, tow hooks, foglamps, all-terrain tires and a full-size spare tire. The freedom ii package is available for sport 4wd 19,175) and limited 4wd 23,130).  options include a trailer tow prep group with engine oil cooler and wiring harness 130); a 458-watt boston acoustic premium sound system with nine speakers and steering wheel controls 495); six-disc cd 320); 6cd with navigation 1395); yes essentials seating material 250); heated seats 250); sunroof 800); and 17-inch all-terrain tires 140).  safety features include frontal airbags, curtain airbags; electronic stability control, abs, electronic brake-force distribution. walkaroundthe patriot is unmistakably a jeep. It looks like a jeep all the way: more so than the stylish cherokee or big boxy commander. The windshield and backlight are relatively vertical, and the bumpers are defined and not molded into the fascia. It's almost exactly the same size as the new jeep compass but it looks more rugged, lacking the rounded edges of the gentrified compass. It looks more like a liberty, or maybe like a baby commander. It's classic, the way it should be. interiorthe seating position is high in the patriot, two inches higher than in the caliber; with the upright windshield, the forward visibility inspires confidence. Leather in the limited is great, but seems to overdress the patriot. The climate and sound system controls are easy to understand and operate. The vinyl panel, with a center stack trimmed in brushed aluminum-look plastic, doesn't try to be stylish; the lines are pretty square, but who cares?  the space between the seats includes a nook for change, two fixed cupholders, and the parking brake lever. A short armrest flips up to open the main console compartment, where there's a pocket for a cellphone or ipod. It slides forward three inches for shorter drivers.  the door pockets are on the small side, but can hold six cd cases; much of the space there is taken up by the six- by nine-inch speakers. The door handles are easy to use. That's the same as the compass and a couple inches more than the liberty, longest of the three.  the standard rear seat is a 60/40 split that easily folds flat, by flipping up the seat and flopping down the seatback. Reclining rear seats are optional, as is a flat-folding front seat. With everything folded flat, there's a spacious 62. 7 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and room for an eight-foot-long kayak, ladder or whatever.  with just the rear seats folded, there's still 54. 2 cubic feet; and with all the seats in use there's 23. 0 feet in the back, good for any compact suv. The rear cargo area is something called ultra floor, a washable and removable vinyl. No worries with dogs and lawn mowers. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter engine works well in the jeep patriot. Chrysler uses this 2. 4-liter world engine in a lot of vehicles. Depending on things like electronic programming and the transmission that's used, it feels different each time. In the jeep patriot, it feels great. Jeep has found the power, 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. That's good because left to its own programming, the cvt makes the patriot feel like it's powered by a big rubber band. It will go from 0 to 90 mph without shifting. In any case, that's the way cvts work.  and this is only under full throttle. The patriot can also lope along at 80 mph and a mellow 2600 rpm. The patriot forums on this should be interesting. At speeds below about 50 mph, when the cvt kicks down for better acceleration, it does so slowly and with a small thump. And often, in the mountains.  the five-speed manual gearbox was a relief, a joy to use, even with its long throw. The lever comes out of the center stack as it should, above the driver's right knee, an improvement over being on the floor near the right thigh. The five-speed made the patriot feel like a jeep. It brought out the potential of the world engine. It didn't try to mess with the power. The acceleration felt much stronger.  the suspensi. 2007 jeep compass review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new crossover with big-suv virtues. introductionthe 2007 jeep compass is all new, a term usually meaning that a vehicle has been completely redesigned. But in the case of the compass, it's a completely new vehicle: first generation.  one way to measure the value of the compass might be to compare it to the trusty jeep cherokee that was enormously popular for 18 years and finally ended its run in 2001. The compass is slightly bigger and light years better than the cherokee was 10 years ago. It features electronic variable valve timing that continually changes the torque curve, bringing more versatility to the 165 peak pound-feet of torque, and more capability to the 172 peak horsepower. The cvt is optional with the compass sport model, and standard on the limited, where autostick can be added to the cvt. Autostick enables the driver to shift up and down over six steps, making it feel like a six-speed gearbox without a clutch pedal. The combination of cvt with six-speed autostick is the best of both worlds, and works more precisely than the manual/automatic transmissions in many expensive sports sedans.  the safety, ride and handling of the compass are all excellent, with a strong steel structure and well-planned subframe. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control with anti-rollover sensors are standard. Although, in order to keep the advertised msrp down, air conditioning and power windows and locks are optional.  the styling is similar but sleeker than jeep's other small suv, the liberty, which uses a six-cylinder engine. There's good interior space all around, with rear seats that fold flat to make about 54 cubic feet of cargo space. Options for added versatility include reclining rear seats and a passenger front seat that also folds flat, creating either a table or eight-foot-long space for storage. lineupthe jeep compass lineup comes as two models, sport 15,425) and limited 19,580). It comes standard with a five speed manual or a cvt automatic 1000).  the sport model comes standard with an am/fm/cd player with auxiliary audio input jack. The front and rear fascia and side moldings have shiny aluminum accents.  options for the limited include the sport options, plus a six-speed autostick mode with the continuously variable transaxle 1150), a navigation system, hands-free bluetooth communication, chrome-plated 18-inch aluminum wheels 825) and the boston acoustics sound system 460).  safety features that come standard on all models include anti-lock brakes with brake assist (which applies more brake force than the driver is applying if sensors determine it's needed in a panic stop), electronic stability control (esp) with electronic roll mitigation (erm), and side-curtain air bags for head protection. Also standard are state-of-the-art seatbelts in all five positions, so be sure to wear them. Safety options include side airbags for the front seats 250) for torso protection in a side impact. A tire pressure monitoring system is available as part of a package. walkaroundmany won't be able to tell the compass from a liberty because the styling is so similar, especially in front with the classic jeep grille having seven vertical slots, but the differences are clear. The compass looks more like a crossover suv, especially from the sculpted side, with smoothly angular flares over the wheels, as opposed to the plastic cladding on most liberty models. The rear door handles are vertical, mounted on the c-pillars to preserve the character line.  the liftgate on the compass is sloped at nearly a 45-degree angle while the liberty's is vertical; and the third side window, into the cargo area, is a stylized triangle (leaving more sheetmetal and reducing visibility) while the liberty's window is, again, squared.  that slope at the rear of the compass is matched by the steeply raked windshield, leading up to a roof that's six inches lower than the liberty's. Black plastic roofrails continue from the top corners of the windshield all the way to the spoiler over the liftgate, channeling water over the roof.  the compass is one inch closer to the ground than the liberty. The more car-like styling and relative sleekness make the compass look longer than the liberty, but it's actually one inch shorter.  the compass limited has aluminum-looking trim on the sides and bumpers. The less-costly sport looks classier in its cleaner monotone. The optional 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels on the limited will appeal to those who want their jeep suv to look more like a cadillac escalade. interiorthe jeep compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. The front bucket seats are very comfortable without being soft. The front seat jacks upward, which is nice because the long dash makes it hard to see the ground in front of the car, even though the hood is short. The center stack is wide and intelligent: rectangular vents on top, over the one-disc am/fm/cd, over a slot that might hold a paperback book. Below that are three climate control knobs, some buttons and then the shift lever at the driver's right knee. Both the automatic and manual transaxle levers are mounted in this practical high forward position, introduced by honda after being copied from rally racing cars, where ergonomics matter.  moving rearward between the front seats, there are two fixed cupholders, the emergency brake handle, and a flip-up center console containing a slot for a cellphone or mp3 player. The console top is an armrest, and can be slid three inches to accommodate drivers of different sizes.  legroom is good, both front and rear: 39. 4 inches in the rear. The compass will be a fine vehicle for a family trip, with reclining rear seats, optional on sport and standard on limited. There are cupholders in the rear but no net pockets on the front seatbacks, which would be nice. Grab handles make it easy to climb out.  the rear 60/40 seats fold flat with the touch of a finger on each side, as easy as it gets. The front seat on the limited model folds flat, making a table. The rear cargo area, a decent 53. 6 cubic feeet with the rear seats folded, is covered by a rugged vinyl mat that's removable for washing. The space-saver spare tire is neatly stored under the mat. One innovative feature on the limited is the removable rechargable led flashlight mounted in the headliner above the cargo area.  the one-piece liftgate has panels for structural integrity, and the rear bumper has a non-skid rubber surface for stepping onto. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter world engine is the right powerplant for the jeep compass. It uses the latest technology, including.
