2004 pontiac grand prix review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Interior flexibility, improved performance for a solid hit. introductionthe pontiac grand prix has been known as a fine mover, a good stopper, a fair looker and a reasonable handler. In its 2004 manifestation expect general improvements in all those categories, but prepare for a real surprise party in the interior. And not only in eye-appeal and ergonomics but in versatility, flexibility and utility.  the latent creativity of the general motors design staff has been stirred into activity coming up with more good ideas than a carton of cartoon light bulbs. If the name wasn't already taken for machines more cumbersome this mid-size sedan could be dubbed a 'sport-utility vehicle' because it has valid claim to both elements. Two versions of the gt model are available, gt1 21,760) and gt2 23,660). Gt1 has less standard equipment. Abs, for instance, is optional 600).  gtp 25,860) gets a supercharged version of that same engine, increasing the ratings to 260 hp (at 5200 rpm) and 280 ft.-lbs. The all-new competition group 1395) is an option package for the gtp that adds a sports suspension system, stabilitrak sport, and tapshift. Stabilitrak sport is a vehicle-stability system tuned to provide maximum hands-on control during cornering. The rear end is as muscular as a speed skater. Pronounced, enlarged taillights are mounted at the corners. A discreet spoiler finishes the deck lid.  through the taillights and extended into the sheet metal are two horizontal bulges, like cladding segments escaped from the sides of a grand am. If this were a fashion story i would say they were 'to add eye interest' to the back. Anyway, following a 2004 grand prix down the highway is a pleasant occupation. The back is important in appearance and certainly distinguishable from its road mates.  appearance is the most subjective aspect of any automobile. Suffice it to say i would rather follow this grand prix than spot it in the rearview mirror: i'm not delighted with the front end of this 2004 model.  the slightly sculptured hood is a good beginning, but when shaping lines come off the hood swooping down to trace around the grille something goes wrong for me. The resulting grille with its trademark pontiac division is straight across on top with bowl-shape curving sides. It appears to me like a tight smirk, ungenerous and simpering. The headlights are even more slanted and attenuated than on the previous grand prix.  the so-called coke bottle sides are marked (marred i would say) by two parallel character lines through the two doors about a hand's span below the door handles. Gratefully, there's no cladding but these lines bother me. I think one reason the new grand prix looks best in black is because black hides these lines.  the black grand prix at the press introduction also had a solution for some of my objections to the new grille, a heavier, more important optional chrome surround. (now if a black grand prix came with a crew armed with california dusters i'd consider it in a heartbeat.)  . interiorinside is where the grand prix absolutely shines. General motors cars have consistently disappointed me in their interior design. I circled it in delight. Then i opened the door only to find the same unrelenting, ugly cliff of an instrument panel that the general had plunked into every model from cadillac to suburban.  i would guess that changes in gm interiors will demonstrate a singularly visible (and tactile) impact that bob lutz has on his new employer's products. He is known to be an admirer of audi and vw interiors, probably the world's best, and the grand prix reveals progress in that direction in choice of textures, in shapes and in the feel of whatever is touched. Leather and satin nickel set the tone for the grand prix interior style, materials pleasant to both eye and fingertips continue the experience.  the grand prix seats are supportive and comfortable. The steering wheel fills the hand just right. The outside mirrors are remarkably large for a sedan. That's a feature suv drivers often mention as a reason they like suvs. The large center speedometer stands out from and overlaps the tachometer (on the left) and the circle containing the fuel and temperature gauges (on the right). No cluttering inner-ring of numbers. Below an organized cluster of white icons on simple black buttons and dials keep the driver tuned in, warm or cool, etc. Pleasing to look at and nothing bewildering.  as comfortable as the seating, as pleasant to look at and feel as the interior is what is really special is its functionality and flexibility. Not only do the back seats fold down in pairs or singly (60/40 split) to effectively increase cargo capacity, the back of the front passenger seat folds forward, table flat.  all this flat and nearly flat space can be accessed through the trunk (with a particularly low lift-over height.) thus it's easy to fold the appropriate seats and load long objects into the vehicle. That kayak mentioned above or a roll of carpet or a ladder or skis or italian market umbrellas. That trunk opening besides being lower is also about ten inches wider. They had to be stripped of their packing to manipulate them through the doors. Cognizant of that problem, grand prix designers played dentist: 'open wider, please.' and now the doors swing out to a few degrees shy of 90, improving ingress and egress for people and stuff.  driving alo. driving impressionif memory serves, the pontiac grand prix has always been fun to drive. The driving experience is noticeable, not the vehicle providing that experience. Anyone test-driving such a car has to consciously force attention through to the vehicle instead of simply enjoying the ease of motion, the willingness of the engine, the responsiveness of the brakes. The testing driver has to notice what the designers have worked to make seamless. I made myself notice and allowed myself to enjoy.  to maintain peak performance athletes might clamp an oxygen mask to their face. That's what an engine is doing with a turbo- or supercharger: forcing more oxygen inside. While a turbo comes into play after the engine is spooled up a bit, the supercharger is there from the get-go.  the 3. 8-liter v6 in the grand prix is normally aspirated in the gt model but supercharged in gtp versions. That lowers gas mileage slightly, but accounts for the addition of 60 horsepower (to 260) and the reduction by some two seconds in the time it takes to reach 60 mph from zero. We're talking just 6. 5 seconds in the comp g, a comforting figure when merging or passing in tight situations. At that the gas mileage is respectable: the gt gets 20 city and 30 highway with two mpg less for the supercharged versions.  usually when power even approaching 200 hp is put through the same wheels that steer the car (i. E., the front wheels) a phenomenon known as torque steer ensues. This is that disconcerting tug at the steering wheel under rapid acceleration. It's like the front wheels are in a race with each other. Happily, there's little to no torque steer in the 2004 grand prix. Pull away smoothly with the right foot down hard and the grand prix is as stable as an acura.  the f. Tachometer

2006 pontiac torrent review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Pontiac introduces car-based, compact suv. introductionthe all-new 2006 pontiac torrent is the biggest of the compact suvs. It's built on the platform of the chevy equinox. Unlike most pontiacs, torrent's styling is restrained, clean and pleasing. lineupthe 2006 pontiac torrent comes with a choice of front-wheel drive 22,400) or all-wheel drive 24,300). Torrent is powered by gm's 3. 4-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. Only one trim level is offered, but with a variety of options.  standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, am/fm/cd with six speakers, remote entry and automatic door locks, fog lamps, roof rails, daytime running lights, a rear window wiper, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.  options include a premium package 795) with leather interior and heated front seats. The preferred package 1555) includes primarily a six-way power driver's seat, tinted glass, cruise control, crossbars for the roof rails, and leather-wrapped steering wheel to accent the cloth interior. The sun and sound package 1285) includes a sunroof and six-disc pioneer sound system with seven speakers and a subwoofer and amplifier. Stand-alone options include xm satellite radio 325) and 17-inch aluminum wheels with all-season tires 295).  safety features that come standard include abs, a rear child-seat latch system, and the mandated front airbags. An optional security package 1090) includes side curtain airbags and one year of onstar service. Electronic stability control isn't available. walkaroundthe pontiac torrent is relatively large for the class, with a wheelbase that's 13 inches longer than that of the ford escape. The torrent is based on a car platform. It shares its basic structure with the chevy equinox and saturn vue. Torrent is the same shape as the equinox, but torrent's split kidney grille announces it's a pontiac and gives it some distinction. Distinction is in fairly short supply in this class, however, and the torrent looks similar to most suvs in this category.  all in all, it's a pleasing, subtle design, with clean lines and a forward wedge shape to the sides. The trapezoidal twin-beam headlamps are strong, reminiscent of a saab, and so is the pseudo skid-plate that wraps up onto the front fascia, coming from under the car. The b-pillar is flat black, so it's barely visible between the tinted glass of the front and rear doors; this accentuates the thick c-pillar, and the pleasant tall rectangular shape of the rear side window. Thick aluminum roof rails are suggestive of those on the nissan xterra and help give this car-based suv a more rugged appearance. The outside door handles are the big grab variety, making it easy to open the doors and climb in without breaking fingernails. interiorgetting in the pontiac torrent is easy. The seats are comfortable, though we'd prefer more side bolstering.  the cabin looks nice, though the materials vary in quality. The standard cloth upholstery, used on the seats and door trim is attractive. The available leather seats are also nice. The instruments are uncluttered and easy to read, despite the red lighting. The dashboard is low, affording good forward visibility. Big side mirrors make more good rearward visibility. The inside door handles are easy to operate. On the floor is a single cupholder that works well for cans and water bottles; just aft of this, also on the floor, are slots for cds angled forward for easy access. A pair of cupholders can be popped out of the end of the console, but they're flimsy and obstruct the floor-mounted handbrake lever; we avoided using them, preferring the floor-mounted cupholder. The door pockets are narrow, though there are map pockets on the sides of the center tunnel. There's room for a cell phone on each side of the gear lever, which is surrounded by a grippy rubber pad.  the optional pioneer sound system is deep and rich, something we discovered while listening to xm satellite radio's cinemagic station, with movie soundtracks.  the rear seat slides forward or back eight inches, a nice feature. Sliding it forward and adds five cubic feet of cargo space. The rear seat is split 60/40 for cargo versatility, and the seatbacks recline, so passengers back there can really lie back. The front passenger seat folds flat, turning it into a tray or allowing long items, like a surfboard, to stretch from the tailgate to dashboard.  the cargo compartment features a clever polycarbonate tray that pulls out of the floor and can be slotted into one of three height levels, so it can be used for different things, including concealment. It allows two levels of grocery boxes or bags, for example. The tailgate lifts high enough that all but the tallest owners can stand fully upright beneath it. driving impressionthe pontiac torrent gets good acceleration out of its 185-horsepower v6 engine. It uses an older, overhead-valve design, however, so it's not as smooth and quiet as, say, an overhead-cam engine from toyota. Epa rates it 19/24 city/highway miles per gallon. The upshifts are nice and tight. There's good engine torque, with 210 pound-feet, and the transmission ratios and electronically variable shift points are well matched. We drive two steep hills every day in all kinds of vehicles, including those far more powerful than the torrent; many other transmissions have to kick down, but the torrent did not. The longest wheelbase and widest track in the class surely add to this capability. The ride was good, including over some rough gravel roads, and. It's not hard to spin the front wheels when taking off quickly, and the front-drive torrent comes standard with traction control to mitigate that. We haven't driven an all-wheel-drive version. It's a competent vehicle with some nice convenience features, such as a sliding rear seat. In terms of refinement it's about average for the class.  newcartestdrive. 2008 pontiac grand prix review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fun to drive and practical. introductiontrue to its long heritage, the pontiac grand prix is a big car promising performance-car excitement. The first two generations of grand prix were big cars, even by 1960s standards. The current-generation grand prix was launched as a 2004 model, and we think it's the best grand prix yet. The v6 develops 200 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 230 pound-feet of torque at 4000. The v6 gets an epa-rated city/highway 18/28 mpg, while meeting sulev (super low emissions vehicle) standards in california and the northeast.  the grand prix gxp boasts a 5. 3-liter v8 that makes 303 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 323 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The v8 gets an epa-rated 16/25 mpg. Abs 600) is optional and comes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and advanced traction control; the security package adds side curtain airbags, and we recommend this.  options include a premium package 940) with leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a fold-flat front passenger seat, and a cargo net. A more elaborate preferred package 965) includes power lumbar support, fold-flat front passenger seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, redundant audio controls on the steering wheel, driver information center, chrome interior accents, remote vehicle start, a cargo net, and a lighted vanity mirrors and reading lights. The special edition 1,995) adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, stainless exhaust tips, body-color grille and aero extensions all around; while a sport package 680) adds fog lamps, stainless exhaust tips, and polished aluminum wheels; and a custom accessories package 675) combines a unique rear spoiler, front grille inserts, and stainless steel exhaust tips. Polished alloy wheels 495), the fold-flat front passenger seat 75), and remote starter 190) are also available as stand-alones.  the performance-oriented gxp 29,325) boasts a 5. 3-liter transverse-mounted v8 that makes 303 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 323 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The gxp’s automatic transmission comes with tapshift (touch activated power), a feature that provides a pair of steering-wheel-safety features include dual-stage front airbags as standard equipment. Antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, and curtain airbags are optional. Mounted paddles for manual shift capability. Gxp models also get bigger brakes, an antiskid system, leather and suede upholstery, dual-zone climate controls, heated front seats, nine-speaker monsoon sound system, a head-up instrument display, 255/45wr18 front and 225/50wr18 rear bridgestone potenza tires, and polished alloy wheels. Most of the equipment that’s optional on the base model is standard on the gxp. And the suspension is even sportier, with higher spring rates, gas-charged shocks, a nine-millimeter lower ride height, and a larger rear stabilizer bar.  both models are offered with a sunroof 895); or a sun and sound package that combines a power sunroof and a 6-cd changer on the gxp 1,195) plus the monsoon sound system on the base model 1,590). Xm satellite radio 200) and an engine block heater 75) are also available. A navigation system is offered on both models, but its price 1,845-2,540) varies depending on other equipment. Safety features include dual-stage front airbags as standard equipment. Antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, and curtain airbags are optional. walkaroundthe grand prix is an attractive car. A commitment to style separates the grand prix from other mid-size transportation appliances. The rear end is as muscular as a speed skater's. Pronounced, enlarged taillights are mounted at the corners. A discreet spoiler finishes the deck lid.  pushing through the taillights and extended into the sheet metal are two horizontal bulges, like cladding segments escaped from the sides of an old grand am. The rear is important in appearance and certainly distinguishable from its road mates. Following a grand prix down the highway is a pleasant occupation.  up front, the slightly sculptured hood flows into pontiac's trademark twin nostril grille. The overall effect looks a bit like a tight smirk or knowing grin, enhanced by the grand prix’s slanted and attenuated headlights.  the coke-bottle sides are marked by two parallel strakes that slash through the doors about a hand's span below the door handles. Gratefully, there's no cladding, but those deep cut lines can be off-putting. One reason the grand prix looks best in black is because black hides these creases.  the aerodynamic door handles can be hard to grab and hold onto when in a hurry. interiorthe grand prix interior is has been upgraded since its introduction and it's a pleasant environment that is appropriate for the price. Materials pleasant to both the eye and fingertips enhance the experience, especially in the gxp, where the steering wheel and shifter are leather-wrapped.  the seats are supportive and comfortable. Front-seat headroom is not as good as in some of the other mid-size sedans, however. The leather-wrapped steering wheel fills the hand just right. The outside mirrors are remarkably large for a sedan. They offer excellent rearward vision yet add no noticeable wind noise. All of the controls are well-marked and within arm's reach. The glove box lid opens with the clatter of plastic.  rear-seat headroom is a bit tight, the downside to the coupe-like body design, and the rear seat-bottoms are flat and set low, making long-trip comfort an issue. The large center speedometer stands out from and overlaps the tachometer to the left and the circle containing the fuel and temperature gauges to the right. With a background in a shadowy grid pattern, these watch-like dials yield their information with simple, uncluttered, handsome functionality. No cluttering inner-ring of numbers.  the head-up display in the gxp is almost subliminal in its presence. Below an organized cluster of white icons on simple black buttons and dials keep the driver tuned in, warm or cool, etc. Pleasing to look at and nothing bewildering.  the cabin is comfortable and pleasant to look at, but what is really special is its functionality and flexibility. Not only do the back seats fold down in pairs or singly (with a 60/40 split) to effectively increase cargo capacity, the back of the front passenger seat folds forward, table-flat on gxp (optional on base). With all those seats folded, there’s 57 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to some small wagons.  all this flat and nearly flat space can be accessed through the trunk, which benefits from a particularly low lift-over height. Thus it's easy to fold the appropriate seats and load long objects into the vehicle: a roll of carpet or a ladder or skis or italian market umbrellas. The trunk opening itself is low and wide.  with the rear seat up and five people on board, the trunk still holds 16 cubic feet of whatever those folks.

2007 pontiac g6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The coupe is comfortable and sporty. A panoramic roof is available on sedans, with panels that slide rearward creating a sunroof large enough for the back seat riders to enjoy an open-air experience.  new for 2007, the gtp sedan features a 3. 6-liter v6 with variable valve timing and a six-speed automatic transmission. Hydraulic power steering is standard on all gt models, and head curtain side-impact airbags are standard on g6 sedan and coupe. G6 also gets 17-inch five-spoke, high-vent wheels for 2007, and a standard interior rearview electrochromic mirror with compass display. New exterior color options for 2007 include blue-gold crystal metallic and dark gray steel metallic.  the mission of the pontiac g6 is to beat the honda accord, nissan altima and mazda6 on value, a proposition bolstered by lower prices. While the g6 doesn't offer the refinement or attention to detail of its japanese rivals, it's an alternative worth considering for shoppers in the mid-size car market. Standard features on the special value model 17,245) include air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, am/fm/cd player, variable intermittent wipers, tachometer, theft-deterrent system, and 16-inch steel wheels with 215/60r16 tires. The base model 18,800) adds cruise control, remote keyless entry and 17-inch steel wheels with 225/50r17 tires.  the gt sedan 22,380), gt coupe 22,150), and gt convertible 28,750) come standard with a 3. 5-liter v6, abs, and 17-inch wheels and tires. Option packages are available to personalize the car.  safety features that come on all models include driver and passenger front airbags (the passenger side airbag features occupant detection) and seatbelts with pretensioners. New standard safety features for 2007 are side-impact air bags and head curtain airbags for g6 sedan and coupe models. Anti-lock brakes packaged with traction control are standard on gt and gtp models (optional on base models). Basic traction assist is available on the base model, full-spectrum traction control on the gt, and traction control with the gm/delphi stabilitrak chassis control system will be available on the gtp. Onstar 695) is an excellent safety feature for its ability to summon help. We recommend opting for all this stuff. walkaroundthe pontiac g6 models are attractive cars. They have the smooth styling of the latest-generation pontiacs, sharing cues with the solstice roadster and other models and sort of a lexus/toyota look from the rear. In fact, the g6 led this latest pontiac styling revolution. Its clean, uncluttered lines are quite pleasing.  instead of side cladding, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with an optional delicately integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid.  gtp models look similar to the gts, but with a spoiler and chrome exhaust tips. The base version has almost no decoration at all, and is relatively dull-looking.  the coupe and convertible inject a little more excitement into the styling. The two share the same sleek profile, although the roof on the coupe looks much better integrated (for obvious reasons). The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, both cars feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid that looks similar to the toyota solara coupe and convertible. We think it's an improvement over the blander styling of the sedan.  the pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu.  all g6 models use the long wheelbase version of the epsilon platform (like the malibu maxx), which gives them ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major torque rings that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. In addition to the torque rings, the g6 structure also uses high-strength steel for about 60 percent of underbody components and central tunnel. Rather than just a single layer of sheet steel, the tunnel has an extra piece of steel welded between it and the floor pan. The stiff body uses fully isolated front and rear subframes to carry the heavy stuff, and the front one is hydroformed for strength and light weight.  these measures can be experienced in the smooth ride and sharp handling of the g6. interiorthe pontiac g6 has a nice interior with attractive fabrics and comfortable bucket seats. At first, it has that tank-like pontiac feeling of sitting down low in the cockpit, but that feeling goes away with a little familiarity and the g6 becomes a happy companion. The cabin is altogether different from the old soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of older pontiacs. It's much more modern, more european.  the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded.  rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. Those with tall friends or family may want to remember that the panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the sedan's headliner. The coupe's rear seating is a little tighter, and the convertible's tighter still, especially in shoulder and hip room. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it; very tasteful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels.  the center stack has a red-led readout and control panel that allows every owner to use the sound system's features, and to customize the locking, lighting, and other functions, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy, intuitive and fun to use. The audio system works well and the knobs are sized well for operating while driving, a welcome relief from the tiny buttons and knobs on many systems. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. It's an interesting feature and we recommend it.  the convertible's top was engineered with karmann, which specializes in convertibles. The big top opens and closes within 30 seconds, storing under the truck lid and a hard tonneau cover when open. We found it works exceptionally well, powering up or down with the press of a button. Hold the button down after it's done and the windows will power up or down appropriately.  the trunk is still accessible when the top is down, but space is reduced from a tiny 5. 8 cubic feet to a grocery-bag sized 1. 8 cubic feet. The trunklid on the convertible was heavy and relatively hard to lift open. driving impressionthe pontiac g6 is fun to drive and quite pleasant for cruising around. We found the sedan, coupe and convertible models reasonably quiet around town.

A panoramic roof is available on sedans, with panels that slide rearward creating a sunroof large enough for the back seat riders to enjoy an open-air experience.  The price point makes the Pontiac G6 a popular choice as a mid-size sedan and we've found it roomy and plush with excellent overall function.
